Recently, I experienced something that I felt I needed to share... an awakening of sorts. Not on a personal level (although I can't say it didn't affect me in the same way), but more on a global or perhaps universal level.
It was a unseasonably warm day... westerly winds melting away the snow and ice as I made my way to Home Depot to collect supplies for my never-ending list of projects. As I approached the city limits, I noticed the spirit of a man standing on the bridge above me, arms outstretched as if he was trying to take flight from the gusts of wind. As I got closer, he threw himself off the bridge, but disappeared before his "form" hit the ground. I saw him again a little further down the road, leaning against a traffic sign and he smiled and winked as our eyes met. Then he was sitting beside me in my car and before I could ask, he just tipped his finger to his hat, winked again and left. I started looking for him along my journey... wondering where he might be next and how I might help him (although, in hindsight, he hardly appeared to be in distress and in need of my help in any way).
As the road narrowed and traffic thickened, I suddenly noticed "them" ~ everywhere! The elderly lady sitting in the front seat of the passing SUV, the black lab in the back of the truck in front of me, the small boy who waved shyly from the car beside me and the woman yelling, unheard, at the young man weaving in and out of traffic. In every instance, as soon as our eyes met, they would simply smile at me and "vanish", the odd one waving as they disappeared into the atmosphere.
I started looking for them everywhere... along the road, bridge decks and green spaces but could only find one frail looking oriental man walking along the sidewalk. He looked up as I passed, nodded, smiled, and vanished. I couldn't help but notice, however, that they were still very much present in many (if not most) of the vehicles on the road that day and then it occurred to me that it was the human interaction they were seeking... as if they needed one last "taste" of the human experience before they moved on to the next.
As I reached my destination and headed to the store, I assumed the phenomena would continue... that every customer at Home Depot would be accompanied by their own "secret shopper" but, quite literally, there wasn't a "soul" in sight. I went about my business, temporarily losing myself in my decorating pursuits and thought nothing more of it until the drive home, when, out of the corner of my eye I noticed a sweet, blonde-haired little girl, smiling and waving at me from the back seat of the minivan that had stopped beside me at the red light.
Before I could even form a return smile, she simply "dissolved" from sight and as my gaze returned to the light in front of me, I was surprised to see three giggling girls swinging from the traffic light as if they were on a playground; feet pumping them higher and higher, heads thrown back in joy, hair blowing in the breeze... The image vanished as the light changed and traffic proceeded through the intersection.
As I left the city limits and continued along the highway with very few vehicles (and their respective "hijackers") to interact with, I couldn't help but wonder about it all... it all seemed so... quick. There were no unresolved issues or emotions coming from any of these spirits. Just a simple human acknowledgement followed by what appeared to be a feeling of sheer and utter joy ~ an undeniable (and, I must admit, rather contagious) state of euphoric ecstasy.
These were clearly not earthbound spirits ~ at least not the sort I am accustomed to. These were spirits who had purchased their tickets, checked their baggage and were happily boarding their flight... waving cheerfully to those they were leaving behind.
Looking back on the experience from the quiet of my home, I couldn't help but sense that this was simply Mother Earth, rising from her winter slumber, stretching, yawning, and releasing, through her very breath, the spirits of ALL (plant, animal and human alike) who lay dormant; waiting for the warmth of sun and the westerly winds to carry them along their journey...
I'm sure there will still be those who linger behind, the "wingless ones" who may need a little more love and nurturing before they are strong and fearless enough to throw caution (and themselves) to the wind and sail off into the atmosphere with little more than a smile and a wave. And I can say from experience... there is nothing that makes you feel more human and alive than sharing the journey with those who appear to be a little less human and alive.
Amazing how spirit finds a way to put their own "signature" on every post. As I headed to YouTube, I wondered which song would go perfectly with the blog when I heard someone sing "all we are is dust in the wind". First video I linked to? Perfection. Let's give "them" a round of applause...

I know! Amazingly light and happy energy... I felt like I was in the middle of a spring bloom opening up to the sun!
It was really quite exceptional to be part of it all and is really nice to know that when my time comes? All I have to do is close my eyes and let go... :)
